Minnow Identification?? - The_Red_Leaker - 01-15-2015
Been catching some minnows for bait using a couple home made traps out of 2 liter bottles - awesome and cheap.
Caught a couple that I can't identify - guessing a catfish of sorts from the mouth which you see best in the last pic where it is upside down in a glass of water.
Hoping the experts out there could tell me what I've captured. They are very eel/snake like in their movements?

My guess is it's a weather loach. They are only in the Jordan River as far as I know.

This website is ridiculous! Question on there for 7 minutes and someone has an answer!
I googled the weather loach and I would say it is a pretty spot on match. They were caught in a tributary to the Jordan but a pretty good ways from the actual river itself. Thanks for sharing your knowledge - never even heard of that fish before.

2 things. First. Don't bring them home and put them in water.
Several years ago a member had some minnows that he caught and took home. Put one in an aquarium. If memory serves me correctly, he was paid a visit by the UDWR and it was explained to him the error of his ways.

Second. Can't seem to find weather loach on the list of approved bait fish. You'd be better off to ask someone at the DWR for a clarification, but I wouldn't assume that just because you caught them that you can use them as bait.

Wow, me either, I was going to say a small burbot and I was hoping you caught it at the Gorge. I never seen a fish like that anywhere along the Wasatch. How long was it?

You could very well be right Fishrman but it could also fall into the new rule change this year where you can catch and kill any fish the DWR deems a threat to the fisheries here in Utah. The quick search I did shows it is an aquarium fish and likely dumped illegally into the Jordan. I agree that it is a good idea to check with the DWR but if it is in fact an aquarium fish then I would say The_Red_Leaker did a good job in killing this fish. By the way, what does it matter if it is in water or not, if it is dead?

Yup. Aquarium fish. Illegal introduction. But it isn't listed as legal for bait. Certainly no limit. Catch and kill.

I agree using it for bait could possibly be illegal, best just to ask the DWR or throw it away.

Even if it had been alive when it was transported I would have no place to keep it alive when I got home - aquarium not part of our home decor. Probably good advice not use it for bait too and but I didn't plan on it anyway. I was just really curious as to what the he!! it was cause first glance as WIperhunter thought, I saw burbot.

It was about 3" - according to wikipedia they can grow to around 12". Wonder what the state record is - maybe I can get into the books?[cool]

I also thought burbet. Then looked up weather loach. and it was one. Had quite a lot of info on it. is an invavsive fish from Asha. grows to12 inches, has been seen in Farmington bay 2007 , being ate by ducks and Eggrets. Was introduced by aquarium dumping.Has the ability to spred FAST. I am shure glad it was not a ling. I cant spell but That's my life.
