I run a number of these reels on on my boat for both Yellowfin tuna and Marlin and have always used a heavy strike setting for trolling. Latest trends and technics in our area are tending towards a minimul setting, just enough to prevent the reel from letting line out. My problem is that with several of these reels they easily just slip into freespool on there own accord but moreso if it is a little rough. The reels are only 2 seasons old and I returned them to my tackle store to have the problem rectified and the friction increased. To my surprise the repair man tried to bend the chrome guide/slide bits. with minimal result. I dont think this is the answer. can anyone help. Phil

Hi thor thanks for your reply we operate in New Zealand and the reel is definatly sold as a 50stw here, ie 2 speed wide.

I’m just guessing… First, I’d take it back & get the bent plates replaced with new, or they will allow salt in between it & the reel & speed up corrosion if not bent just rite, I wouldn’t think that is the recommended fix…[crazy] I wonder if you might be setting it just a pinch too light..? I think you are doing the single hook with hook far back, for Billfish, letting em get their head & then going up on the drag..? In rough water, there will be more line drag in the water as it rides the waves, tight then loosining... & the pounding of the boat can add to it also. First maybe go a little higher on the lever & see if it works. The fish will hold the lure, I think you just don’t want the hook to start penetrating until it turns away. Is the separator / spacer under the preset knob in good condition? Maybe set the preset a little higher..? If there is a problem, it has to be in the lever assembly somewhere. Can ya report any fix / problem you find for us..? This is interesting. Hi Dan and LBG Many thanks for replies. I have rechecked reels, they are 50sw's, I also have several 50tw's, sorry my mistake, Reels are loaded with 50 lb mono and the drag at the strike setting is set at 30% or 16 lbs. for trolling I have been setting the lever level with the letter "K" on the word "strike" stamped down the side of the reels. My other reels are okay, no problem, I will write to penn as suggested. I have just had an afterthought, I heard of some reels arriving here in new zealand that had been cammed to operate at 80lb, maybe I have 2 of those, how could I tell? thanks phil

I think you need to change out the springs yourself to get the extra drag. There should of been a packet in the box with 4 cupped washers with explaination on use. What kind & how much lube are in your reels..? Do ya remember if there is much differance in the amount of action Each reel has seen? `The slipping ones seen more / less fish..?
