It all depends on what type of fishing you plan on doing. I personally use a 9 foot 5 weight for most of my utah fly fishing...but, I will also use a 6, 7, and even a 9 weight depending on what I am chasing and where I am fishing.
Personally, I rarely use small flies and spend most of my time casting streamers and other large flies. I would say, though, that your 5 weight will work just fine.
