Wind and Ice
#4
For the first few years I ice fished I noticed this same thing happening all the time, not just at otter creek but anywhere I was targeting mainly rainbow. I have discovered that rainbow, unlike pan fish and even other trout, sometimes won't bite at all with the wind constantly shaking the rod tip back and forth, even just a little bit. So now when the wind starts up and the bite stops I lay my rod straight on the ice with the spring bobber out over the hole. This stops all shaking and vibration, and often the fish just keep biting like they were before. Did this very thing down to otter creek a few weeks ago and kept catching them til we left. Got to be very attentive though or your rod will disappear down the hole.
