I did worry about poking a hole in the poontoons. At one point I was going through stuff so thick that I couldn't move, I pulled one of the oars out and used it as a push pole to get through it.
I couldn't row or kick through it, it was shallow enough I could have gotten out and walked, but using the oar to push through worked.
