I worked at the S.L. store. People did abuse the lenient Orvis rules a lot. They would go so far as to break a rod on purpose to get a new one.
I get that they prefer you take it to the store as the store can turn around and sell it as used.
It does suck that there isn't a store here. I would continue to talk to the phone service. I am betting you will get favorable results.
