Hello everyone, it has been a long time since I have posted anything on BFT. I am planning on camping at Yuba reservoir this weekend and I was wondering if anyone has any tips on catching pike? My girlfriend will be with me, so I will probably set her up bait fishing. I was thinking about catching a carp and using carp meat as bait. Does anyone know if that will work for pike? Or, is there another kind of bait that will catch a pike? I know she will not want to pitch lures all day, so if anyone has any bait suggestions for pike, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Cast a 6" Maniac Minnow rigged on a 1/4 oz to 3/8 oz jig head with a 4/0 hook. Work it slow in the shallows. best colors are smoke blue pearl, Holographic Shad, and Juvenile perch.

Just chuck anything big and shiny towards the shore.

I am far from an expert in fishing for pike, but no one has offered you any suggestions for your GF, except for what you stated she wouldn't enjoy doing. I would fix her up with a bobber and try a chunk of carp meat and it that doesn't work be prepared with some whole chub minnows.

Whole minnows, including yellow perch are legal at Yuba.

Or, you can use a slide sinker with an 18 inch leader with a 4/0 hook. If you use a whole yellow perch, slide a chunk of foam in its mouth so it will float off the bottom. The carp idea works fine, too. There are a ton of little carp in Yuba.

In the fall I took my daughter (9 yrs old) with us to Yuba and set her up fishing vertically from the boat in 20 feet of water. I put a chunk of carp meat on a hook with a heavy sinker up a foot from that. She just sat and held the pole and caught 1.5 nice pike.
Funny thing is I didn't think it would work, so I didn't bother putting a steel leader on her line. She boated one of them, but lost the second one (line cut) just as we were about to boat it. The second one was close to 30-32 inches.
There were three of us fishing with large crank bait, and we only caught three pike between the three of us. So, she out fished us all.
I attached a picture of the smaller pike my daughter caught which we did boat. The second picture is a picture of two of the pike caught by my friend who came along and my son. They actually had these two fish on their lines at the same time.

Thanks for all the advice! The windy weekend scared us away from Yuba, so I didn't get a chance to try for any pike. My girlfriend and I are very excited to head to Yuba when we get a little bit of decent weather! Thanks again for all the tips.
